St. Kitts nightlifeSt. Kitts is by no means a glitzy nightlife capital, but the island is home to a single casino at Jack Tar Village (see above). The casino, open to adult island visitors, features slot machines, roulette, blackjack, craps, poker and mini-baccarat.

The best shopping stop is St. Kitts'Caribelle Batik (869-465-6253) at Romney Manor, where you can watch batik in progress. You'll hear an explanation of the step-by-step process and can buy the finished product in the form of shirts, wraps and wall hangings. Prices are reasonable and the batik makes a colorful souvenir of your island visit. We purchased a batik of a string band that brings back good memories of our island stays. (Even if you don't want to buy, it's worth visiting Romney Manor to see the grounds, which are some of the most beautiful in the Leeward Islands.)

St. Kitts Caribbean FoodA meal on St. Kitts means traditional Caribbean fare – snapper, grouper, salt fish or even flying fish – accompanied by side dishes such as breadfruit, pumpkin, yams and the obligatory rice and (pigeon) peas. Everything will be flavorful and often spicy. Wash down dinner with the local beer, Carib or the island's own liqueur: Cane Spirit Rothschild, or CSR. Made from cane, this clear liqueur was developed by France's Baron de Rothschild and is manufactured in Basseterre. Apopular drink in St. Kitts is “Ting with a zing.” Ting is a carbonated grapefruit drink sold throughout the Caribbean and, in St. Kitts, is mixed with CSR as an adult concoction.

St. Kitts InnIf you're looking for peace and quiet, St. Kitts and Nevis's plantation inns offer good getaways and a chance to immerse yourself in more of the local atmosphere.
These small inns, built around historic greathouses on former plantations, are intimate properties that host only a handful of guests at a time. As part of just a small group, you'll get to know each other as you would aboard a small cruise. Often, the owners of the inn reside right on property, so you'll receive personal attention.
