Besides animal- and birdwatching, Barbuda has several attractions. The ruins of Martello Tower, a beachside fortress, is one of the last of its kind in theCaribbean. This former lookout nowaffords some breathtaking views. Located south of the airport on the Main Road.

Spanish Point Tower (or The Castle) is another good lookout. It’s set off Main Road on the southeast side of the island. This tower was originally built to defend the island from the fierce Caribs. Take the Main Road south from the airport.

If you can't keep away from the course while on vacation, head to the K-Club, which has its own nine-hole course. The K-Club is nine miles south of airport on the Main Road, 800-223-6800, 268-460-0300.

Hiking

Barbuda is well known for its beaches, especially the pink beaches on the southwestern shore. The eastern shore beaches face the Atlantic and the waters here are rougher, but these beaches are best for beachcombing. Walkers will find some good stretches along this windward side of the island. The eastern shore is home to theHighlands, steep cliffs that containmany caves, some carved with Amerindian petroglyphs.

Taxi service

Taxis are not just the best way to get around, they're about the only way. Don't look for rental cars on this island. Usually a taxi comes to meet the plane at every landing and can take you anywhere you'd like to go.

Many of Barbuda's vacationers are day-trippers from Antigua. Tour prices of $125 to $139 per person include round-trip air fare from Antigua, a sightseeing tour, a visit to the Frigate Bird Sanctuary and lunch. See Birding, below.

Mention Barbuda and most people will recognize this tiny isle for one reason: Princess Diana. The seclusion and privacy of this island was often sought by Diana and draws many famous celebrities. But Barbuda is more than a jetsetters' hideaway; it's also a nature lovers' island. Accessible as a day trip from Antigua or as a vacation destination of its own, this small island is much less developed than its larger sister. Outside the lavish resorts, the island belongs to the wildlife, primarily the feathered variety. It's also noted for its spectacular beaches, long stretches of either pink or white sand that divide
the sea from the land.
