Shopping in Antigua
The primary shopping area on the island is in St. John's, near the cruise ship terminal. It's worth a two- or three-hour excursion to have a look at the goods offered in the small boutiques around the island. Along the waterfront you'll find the most tourist-oriented shopping, with duty-free wares such as fine jewelry, perfumes and liquor.

Where to Eat in Antigua
At the resort restaurants, you'll find familiar dishes on the menu, as well as a few island specialties, such as christophine (a type of squash), pepperpot (a spicy stew), afungi (a pudding of cornmeal and okra) and ducana (a puddingmade from grated sweet potato and coconut, sugar and spices, boiled in a banana leaf). Antigua Sightseeing
The capital of Antigua, St. John's, is home to about 35,000 residents and is the center of both business and tourist activity. Take a stroll around this historic city for a look at St. John's Cathedral, perched on a hilltop overlooking town. Itwas first constructed in 1682, replaced in 1789, the rebuilt and reconsecrated in the 19th century after a devastating earthquake. The structure has two Baroque-style towers. Also have a walk by Government House, the official residence of the Governor General of Antigua and a good example of 17th-century colonial architecture.

Tennis
Tennis is a top sport in Antigua, with good courts at hotels and private tennis clubs. May's Antigua Tennis Week is hosted at Curtain Bluff Hotel (268-462-8400), a property that includes four championship courts, two lit for night play and a full-time pro. The St. James Club (268-460-5000) has seven lighted all-weather tennis courts with a center court for tournaments. Half Moon Bay Hotel (268-460-4300) hosts three professional tennis tournaments: the Men's International Tennis Championship in January, theWomen's International TennisWeek in April and a Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament in October. Half Moon offers five all-weather Laykold tennis courts, a teaching pro and pro shop. Temo Sports (268-460-1781) is a tennis and squash complex with synthetic grass tennis courts lit for night play. Round-robin tennis tournaments are often scheduled and vacationers are welcome to join.
